Famous Old Oak Tree, Salem, New Jersey
Pride of Salem is the great White Oak which casts its shadow
over the serene Friends' Burial Ground. The age of this vener-
able tree has been estimated at 500 years. When last
measured, it stood 88 feet high with a maximum circumfer-
ence of 30 feet. Its low, wide branching arms extend over a
quarter of an acre. The famous tree is sole survivor of the
original forest which covered the town site when John
Fenwick founded Salem in 1675. Beneath its branches
Quaker John signed a treaty with the Indians.
