This is the first volume of the Cambridge Bible Commentary to be published. It gives the New English Bible text of Matthew, with Mr. Argyle's commentary on the same page. The book begins with a substantial preliminary section on the arrangement, purpose, teaching, sources, authorship, date and historical background to the Gospel. The commentary itself deals in detail with the historical, formal and theological aspects of the Gospel, assuming no specialist knowledge on the part of the reader, but giving him the fruits of modern scholarship in an easily comprehensible form.
