This volume is presented as an introduction to the wealth of material collected during the first century of the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Selecting 104 works from among the half-million objects in the Museum -- by no means a simple task -- has offered a pleasant challenge to the staff to reassess their own ideas as to what the "treasures" of the collections are. The objects finally chosen were culled from among those suggested by the curatorial staff as well as from those which throughout the years have continually excited the imagination of great numbers of visitors. It has not been our purpose to ensure that every aspect of the collections has been represented nor that every major donor has been cited....
